Dr. Zaid Mammo is a subspecialist in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of British Columbia. He completed subspecialty fellowship training in medical and surgical retina at the prestigious Edward Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University, New York under the tutelage of Professor Stanley Chang. Following this year, he underwent further training in retinal surgery at Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia’s largest and busiest center for retinal surgery training and research.
Dr. Mammo ’s practice focuses on vitreoretinal surgery and medical retinal disorders, including: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions, retinal tears, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane as well as other diseases of the retina and vitreous.
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Mammo has been actively involved in retinal research with a special emphasis on emerging treatments of retinal disorders and advanced non-invasive imaging modalities of the retina and optic nerve. He helped in establishing the Advanced Retinal Imaging and Analysis Laboratory (ARIAL) at the Eye Care Centre of Vancouver General Hospital. His research work has been supported by grants by the Retina Foundation of Canada, Canadian Glaucoma Research Society and Canadian Cancer Society.
As a clinical assistant professor, Dr. Mammo is involved in the training of medical students, resident and fellows at the University of British Columbia. In addition, he currently serves as the Retina Rotation Lead for the Post-graduate Ophthalmology Residency Program at the University of British Columbia. He is also an active surgical instructor in the world-renowned UBC surgical retina fellowship program
Dr. Mammo’s research interests centre around exploring the role of advanced retinal imaging in the early diagnosis, follow-up and management of retinal diseases. As a resident, he was involved in establishing the Advanced Retinal Imaging and Analysis Laboratory (ARIAL), a collaborative effort that combines clinical faculty from UBC with biomedical engineering expertise from Simon Fraser University (SFU).
This collaborative effort has facilitated the introduction of cutting-edge non-invasive retinal imaging technology including Optical Coherence Tomography-Angiography (OCT-A) and OCT-Adaptive Optics (OCT-AO) into the province of British Columbia. These modalities would allow clinicians to evaluate the microvascular structures of the human retina including the microvasculature as well as the retinal photoreceptors, the light-sensing cells in the eye. Since the inception of ARIAL in 2016, our group has published over twenty OCT-related publications in high-impact journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, British Journal of Ophthalmology and the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
Currently, Dr. Mammo and his research team are in the process of evaluating the role of wide-field hand-held OCT systems as well as Polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) in adult and pediatric retinal diseases. Another area of interest is studying retinal vascular dysregulation using OCT-A in a variety of ocular diseases. These research efforts are generously supported by research grants from the Canadian Glaucoma Research Society and Canadian Cancer Society.
