Education

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is broadly based in the clinical disciplines and has representation from virtually all of the major areas of Ophthalmology within the context of a universal health care system.   The staff in all of our areas are highly experienced individuals who are devoted both to quality clinical care and teaching programs.

The Department offers training in the UBC MD Undergraduate Program, a five-year postgraduate residency program for doctors pursuing a career in ophthalmology, and fellowships in Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics & Orbit, Paediatric Ophthalmology, and Retina & Vitreous.

Medical student, resident rotations and fellowships are held at many university-affiliated hospitals that include BC Children’s Hospital, Eye Bank of British Columbia, Eye Care Centre, St. Paul’s Hospital, and VGH & UBC Hospitals.

Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows positions are available at the Centre for Macular Research (CMR) through programs offered by UBC Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, as well as other UBC departments affiliated with individual CMR members. Prospective graduate students interested in vision research should contact individual CMR members directly.
