Support the UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
The UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences’responds to the eye-care needs of the community through excellence in research, education and community outreach. To achieve this mission, the Department teaches the next generation of eye care physicians, conducts research to advance knowledge in the field and applies new discoveries to develop more effective ways of preventing and treating blindness in BC and beyond.
Innovative Basic and Clinical Research
The Department conducts innovative basic and clinical research to develop more effective ways of preventing and treating blindness. The Department’s researchers are currently developing novel stem cell therapies, investigating the risks and benefits of various treatments, and designing innovative devices to help people with low vision read text.
Training the Next Generation
Each year, UBC clinical faculty care for more than 100,000 patients and educate more than 40 trainees, making the Department among the largest in Canada. In addition to training residents and fellows, and educating undergraduate medical students, the Department is home to a one-of-a-kind Surgical Skills Simulation Lab where trainees can practice their surgical skills.
Community Outreach
The Department is committed to improving eye care in underserved populations. The Department currently works with Vancouver Native Health Society to provide eye care to individuals in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side and is partnering with L V Prasad Eye Institute to train eye-care physicians from India and Canada.
